Hello there, it’s me – Jai.

Don’t you just love a dramatic article title?

I want to apologize for my disappearance from Medium over the past year. Please rest assure that my absence was not due to any aversion to words or the literary landscape. I also don’t have any qualms about the new Medium policies or management and I certainly did not get stranded on a deserted island in the Caribbean or fall in love.

No, my absence has been due to a serious case of adulting. I have found myself whisked away in the thralls of academia and have assumed a teaching position at a venerable university. And as if that wasn’t enough, I was engulfed with renovations of an old rickety house that I’m hoping to call home. I have learned that there are hundreds of shades of white paint and choosing flooring is exhausting but I would definitely do it again. Lastly, I have had to say adieu to a few family and friends. My cousin, Tianna, died too young. She was compassionate, energetic and beautiful. She once told me I had the voice of a 60 year old man — and I do not disagree. That is another reason I write instead of speak. Tianna was only 20 years old and everytime I look at my students I imagine a life she could have lived. God and the universe continue to test my resolve.

But fear not! My hiatus is over and I am armed with quill and wit to regale you of the topics…
